Hi Mom!

May 6, 2011 § 2 Comments

I’m not a lucky person, in the traditional sense of the word.

If we flip a coin, it’ll land in your favor. If I gamble, the other guy, or the house, always wins. I scarcely bother to enter raffles or contests, because I’m fairly certain my business card or ticket is absorbed by the universe the moment it enters the drawing box. I have never found money on the ground, or been in the right place for a give-away, or won a blog or magazine “comment and you’ll get one” treasure. But I truly, madly, deeply don’t care.

When it comes to the stuff that matters, I’ve been really, absurdly lucky. I’m lucky to have a wonderful husband who loves me and tolerates, nay, celebrates my eccentricities, and a sweet little home that I love, and fabulous friends, and the world’s best dog, and a trunk full of yarn at my disposal. I’m lucky to live in a beautiful place in a wonderful country where I can buy lattes of luxury and keep animals as pets. And I’m lucky to have an unbelievably wonderful mom.

My mom is lucky too. She has a great mom, who raised a great mom, who raised me. I can’t tell you how happy I am to know that someday, I’ll be holding my daughter (God-willing… don’t get excited… I’m not announcing, just dreaming) with confidence, knowing that I’ll be mothering her in the shadow of the example of the fabulous moms with whom I have been blessed. I don’t worry about her. If I’m not instantly a great mom, my great mom will teach me. How lucky is that?

To top it off, I married a man who ALSO has a truly great mom. I’ll take that over a raffle win any day.

Today I am thankful for the abundance of great moms I have the privilege of knowing… the one who raised me, the one who raised her, the one who raised my wonderful husband, and the ones I watch raising beautiful new little ones every day. You are treasured, each of you. Thank you for teaching us what love looks like.

love.

I’m the lucky one. Mother’s Day is a great day for moms – not so much for the chance to be celebrated, but for the reminder to be grateful for the awesome priviledge it is to have wonderful children. Thanks to you for the joy you are in my life. Love you! mom
